Who We Are
Against the Crowd (AtC) is an ensemble of creative people who make science fiction and horror audios and freely distribute them on the internet. We have members around the world and collaborate, for the most part, online. Against the Crowd was the name of a TV script written by Nigel Kneale in 1975, in case you're wondering.
What We Make
We want to produce original work, with a smattering of adaptions of classic (e.g. clearly out of copyright) stories. These take the form of monologues, full cast plays or more abstract audio pieces. We will try to produce at least one story every month. We want to produce material good enough to win web awards within the next year.
We do not do 'fan audios' of established properties like Doctor Who as there are many other groups in that area. Contact RobintheCrow with all your Who ideas as he runs the long established and highly successful Who fan group DAM Productions. More details of our script requirements can be seen in a following thread.
Who We Need
We are looking for a range of people with a range of skills to make our projects come to life. If you can write scripts, act well, produce music, design sound, do graphic design or help organise people then you can find a role here. Jobs go to people who volunteer for them and can do them to a decent standard. Some members are highly experienced, others are new to the scene, we are all learning together.
What We Get Out Of It
We get fun, we get social interaction, we get a sense of pride and satisfaction in a job well done but we don't get any money. We make no money from our work, neither do we pay anyone for their time or efforts. This is a hobby, not a job. Nobody pays you to go fishing or watch TV in your spare time either. Some people here have paid jobs in their area of expertise, other people do completely different things, but we are all equal in this endeavour. If you can sell your script or music or production skills in the market then go for it and good luck. If you want to use what you do here as a showcase for your skills to get other work then great, but once again, this is a hobby project. We're doing it as an end in itself and for the pleasure of working and creating together. If you'd rather spend your time seeking or working on paid gigs then great, but this is not the group for you.
Who's in Charge
Some people have permanent roles to help pull everything together. Glenn is the main man here as AtC was his idea. Joanne is the script editor and does admin on this board. RobintheCrow is producing our first piece 'Off the Wagon'. You can contact us about anything at any time via PM. If you want to offer your services then post on the board or PM Joanne. Each project will have its own producer who is in charge of putting the audio together. People can put their hand up for roles - acting, music, sound design etc - in any production and will be given tasks by that producer. However, if you volunteer to do something then you're expected to do it because other people will be relying on you. If you find you can't do it for whatever reason there's no problem but please tell the producer so someone else can take it on. Don't volunteer to do something then sit on it for six weeks as you're busy.
What Can I Do?
Well, as the Sarge said to Ripley in Aliens 'What can you do?' Volunteer on a project and you'll be working on it in some way. You may participate in everything we do, or just one thing, it's up to you. Auditions will be held for acting roles and individuals will be given other roles as appropriate and if someone's already writing the music for a project, for example, there'll always be another piece we need some music for. If you've any other questions then PM Joanne or post on the boards. The more people we have, the more we can do.
What's This Board For?
It's the way we organise ourselves, share ideas and move forward. The more people use it, the more useful it will be and the more people will want to use it. If there's not a discussion about something you're interested in then create one and contribute to others. Feel free to comment on anything. Everyone's ideas are welcome. This is a friendly place. However it is also a collaborative space. Not every idea can be used. Not every note can be taken. If there's six ways of doing something, in the end we can only do one. Constructive criticism and feedback is not only needed, but it's welcome. If you want sole control of a project then write a novel. Collaborative projects are just that, collaborative. Members are not a retinue of servants to bring any one person's vision to life.
Thanks
Thanks for reading, thanks for joining, and thanks for contributing whatever you can. I hope we're all looking forward to making something better together than we could imagine making ourselves.
