'Dandelions'
By Phil Janvier
A three part adventure
Episode One: The Silent Killer
• Intro: Music that ends with an explosion. Only noise is from birds singing.
• Megan Woods, a botanist specialising in toxicology, jokingly called a 'dandelionologist', has been recovering in cottage hospital after being temporarily incapacitated by an unknown sting. She awakes to find that all is silent and there are no staff around. Recovering consciousness, she finds that there has been a power cut and she is lying in a darkened room. Finding her clothes she leaves the room to find the hospital empty. She leaves the building and heads for home.
• Megan makes her way through the village which is filled with helpless people. She faces the future with a mixture of apprehension and excitement. Megan is wandering the streets when she hears a scream and finds a girl with a severe burn on her the back of her hand but no sign of what caused it. She bandages her hand from items borrowed from the local pharmacy and the girl reveals her name as Lucy Smith who had missed the explosion through sleeping off the after effects of a wild party and was on her way home. They return to Lucy's home but find that her family are all dead. Megan describes her earlier life and goes into details about her work on the island. She explains how her work was intended to save the planet.
• They plan to leave the village soon to head to the Research Centre. Cleaning Lucy's wound Megan finds a dandelion seed in it and realises the seeds are the source of the terrible burns and injuries. One seed touching a person is enough to seriously burn them but anyone touched by more than a few will die.. On the way to pick up some protective clothing, Megan and Lucy are almost caught by a mob of panicking people ransacking the shops for food and medicine. They evade them, find decorating overalls with hoods and masks in a DIY shop, and they return to the cottage. During the night, they see and hear another explosion in the distance and clouds of dandelion seeds fill the air and anyone caught out in the open is killed.
Episode Two: The Research Station
• In the morning, Megan and Lucy make their way to the Research Station, to find it was the source of the explosion, they learn that the occupants of the centre are dead also. Megan and Lucy search the buildings and discover what was once a sealed laboratory in a restricted area that Megan knew nothing about. Indications are that was a Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The explosion destroyed what ever they had been working on. Soldiers burst in, Megan and Lucy and they are taken to decontamination station, where they are showered, questioned and injected.
• Megan is woken by what appears a fire, see Lucy being dragged off and is knocked unconscious. She awakes, bound and locked in a room. Lucy is missing. Megan is a prisoner the soldiers who had parachuted onto the Island to deal with whatever the problem is that had made it all goes silent. Recognising her expertise, she is teamed up with a soldier, Alan Roberts, and together they explore what was truly happening at CDCR lab. Without Alan noticing Megan makes a data backup of the research data and hides it.
• Megan and Alan try to find Lucy but fail as it appears that there is another team of Special Forces on the island and that they have taken her. They discover that the explosion was caused by the invading Special Forces who were trying to destroy the research. In trying to destroy the pathogen research they instead released the mutated dandelions into the environment. The friendly soldiers succumb to a disease that she and Alan have so far been immune to.
• The opposing Special Forces trapped by the seeds are one side of the island, while Megan and Alan are on the other. The wind changes direction and the cloud of dandelion seeds blow their way and the Special Forces come looking for them. Seeking a hiding place until help comes, Megan and Alan leave the station in a jeep, they encounter many dandelions on the way. Finally, making it to the cliff top they seek refuge in the caves. They see a helicopter flying around and are ambushed by the Special Forces.
Episode Three: End Game
• Trapped in the rocks they watch the helicopter open fire on the Special Forces until it is shot down, they manage to escape during the conflict. Hiding in the cave system they discover Katy Lowe, a young girl, whose family has been killed. The next day, circling the island they head to the north coast where they thought Lucy may be being held prisoner. There is one guard, Megan distracts him and Alan takes him prisoner. The guard is horrified when he sees Katy and tries to warn them that she is dangerous. Katy denies being dangerous, touches his hand and the soldier dies in agony.
• Megan is reunited with Lucy. Confronting the devastated Katy, she admits to being the reason for the existence CDCR centre, that Megan's dandelion research was a front for genetic research on Katy. She explains that as a child her parents had illegally experimented on her to remove an inherited illness. The process had worked but the procedure had created a lethal and infectious virus. The centre had produced an antidote and that everyone on the island had been given it in the water supply. Katy had not realised that the soldier had not drunk from the island's water supply.
• Returning to the jeep they drive to the village to find it deserted except for acid burned bodies. Although immune to the virus the inhabitants had been killed by the seeds. Searching the island they discover no one alive and no sign of the Special Forces. Overhead they hear another helicopter, they return to research centre to find Dr Jon Myles, the previous head of the Research Centre, is there in a two-seater helicopter. Understandably concerned he enquires about what had happened, offers to return with more help. He offers to take Katy, as the youngest, back with him. Katy begs to stay with them. Megan refuses to let Katy travel with him and Jon gets angry. The Special Forces appear out of the nearby buildings and surround them. Jon instructs them to put Katy in the helicopter. The research centre may be gone but as long as they hold Katy then their weapon was still viable. The two soldiers who grab Katy die screaming. Megan, Lucy and Alan try to drag Katy into shelter of a building but they are all captured. Jon threatens to kill them all if Katy does not go with him immediately. Reluctantly, she agrees and goes to the helicopter, picking up a wild flower on the way. Once in the helicopter Jon tells his soldiers to kill the hostages. Katy cries 'No' and blows dandelion seeds into his face. Katy jumps out the helicopter as it takes off and she watches it crash. Distracted Alan grabs a gun from his guards, shoots one and takes the others prisoner.
• In a helicopter Megan explains that the island will be quarantined, that she has arranged to take Katy to a safe haven where she will looked after until the antidote is perfected and she can begin a normal life. Alan asks, 'What about the dandelions seeds?' She replies, 'If just one escapes in the wind then the world is in trouble.'
